Welcome to Metis Energy Future

Building Sustainable and
Energy-Efficient Homes for
Metis Settlements

reducing energy consumption

Focus on minimizing energy use to conserve resources and lower environmental impact, promoting efficiency and sustainability.

enhancing sustainability

Enhancing sustainability involves adopting eco-friendly practices to conserve resources, reduce waste, and minimize environmental impact.

improving community

Improving a community involves fostering collaboration, supporting local initiatives, and creating inclusive spaces for growth.

Introduction to the Project

Welcome to Metis Energy Future, where we are committed to building energy-efficient, sustainable homes for Metis Settlements in Alberta. Our mission is to reduce energy consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and improve the overall well-being of our communities by implementing modern, environmentally-conscious construction methods.

Currently, we are working with Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement under the Toward Net-Zero (TNZ) Initiative with our partners at Natural Resources Canada. This involves constructing seven new energy-efficient homes that will meet a minimum Tier 2 standard under the National Building Code (NBC) 2020 and National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) 2020. In addition, we’re retrofitting 95 senior and disabled Member homes with energy upgrades through the Greener Homes Grant and conducting energy-efficient retrofits at the PPMS Communiplex through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) Program.

Together we are ensuring that all new builds and retrofits meet stringent energy efficiency requirements, as measured through EnerGuide ratings, to provide long-term savings and a reduced environmental impact.

Stay up to date with our latest developments on the Metis Energy Future project:

Blueprint for Sustainable Housing

In January 2024, we drafted a comprehensive blueprint that lays the foundation for energy-efficient construction within the Settlement.

Team Meetings

Our project team, including partners from Armstrong Builders, Communitas Group, J.R. Paine and Associates, Sodo EFG Architecture, Acacia Engineering and Liberty Multimedia Inc, has held regular meetings to drive progress, from preliminary floor plans to site evaluations.

Geotechnical Assessment

Completed in Sept 2024, our geotechnical report confirms stable ground conditions, paving the way for the new home construction.

Retrofits Underway

Energy-efficient retrofits are in progress at the PPMS Communiplex and 95 homes owned by the Settlement’s Seniors and Disabled members, with a focus on upgrading to energy efficient windows, doors, air sealing and insulation.

Armstrong Builders

Local Construction Manager

We are proud to partner with Armstrong Builders, a locally owned and Metis-led construction company, to oversee the day-to-day management of the home construction project. Armstrong Builders will ensure that all homes meet a minimum of Tier 2 energy efficiency requirements by implementing sustainable construction practices such as advanced insulation, high-performance windows, and efficient HVAC systems. Their deep ties to Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement ensure that local needs are prioritized, and that local talent is engaged in the construction process.
Geotechnical Report Completed
The geotechnical investigation conducted by J.R. Paine & Associates Ltd. confirmed that the site is generally stable for residential development, with soil conditions consisting of lacustrine clay and clay till deposits. While the groundwater table was found to be high, recommendations were made for effective site grading and foundation design to mitigate any potential issues. The report provides specific guidance on footings, slab-on-grade construction, and drainage systems to ensure long-term structural integrity and resilience against swelling and frost heave concerns.
